Every week we have Astronomy social hour, typically on Thursdays after the weekly colloqium, where we can enjoy the company of our fellow grad students. There are many formats in which this can take place. Most weeks, the typical plan is to walk to a nearby location and chat it up. Some examples include Triple Rock on Shattuck (which has 5cent beers from 5-5:10pm, and the infamous monkey head that you can win a t-shirt with), Free House on Bancroft, or El Talpense on Euclid (especially if you want a wet and wheat burrito and a marg tower to share with your fellow grads). As a recent initiative, we have also been doing activities instead! This includes strolls, spike-ball, and tossing a frisbee. Some have suggested karaoke, obleck making, and game nights. Recently we have also set up department-sponsored twice-a-semester dinners! It is up to the happy hour coordinators to a)set this up and b)make sure there is a budget for this. A personal tip from Savannah is having Jupiter be one of the two semester dinners in order to save money. .. As a result, the astronomy social hour coordinator is a very important position. As you may have noticed, Campbell Hall access is tightly regulated, so you are essential to ensuring that this event can occur on the best balcony on campus. You are also responsible for procuring beverages and setting up and cleaning up social hour. You will work closely with three physics social hour coordinators, as set-up requires multiple pairs of hands. While it is nice if you have a car, it is by no means a requirement, as you only really need 1-2 cars among the 4 coordinators. Traditionally this position is filled by first-year students, as it provides a great opportunity to meet some of your fellow graduate students in the physics department. Another perk of the job: as social hour coordinator, you do not have to pay for your beverages.
